A Guide to Storage for Students

Whether you’re in your first year or your third, students tend to have a pretty busy schedule. Amidst the excitement of Freshers’ Week, exams, new modules, and new friends, organising storage might not be very high on your Uni To-Do list.

Still, it is something you’re going to have to think about. Moving into halls or a student house can take a bit of downsizing — uni rooms aren’t exactly huge to begin with!

From nifty small space storage solutions to self-storage options, here are a few tips that will help you keep your student room tidy. And you know what they say: ‘Tidy home, tidy mind’!

Storage Solutions for Your University Room

It doesn’t matter whether you’re in halls or a house, student rooms aren’t exactly famous for their spaciousness. Here are a few top tips for maximising space in a small uni room:

  • You probably won’t be allowed to fit any permanent shelves to the walls but there are plenty of removable options out there these days that can be taken down without doing any damage.
  • Invest in shoe racks! Hanging shoe racks can be placed in wardrobes or on over-door hooks to store anything from folded clothes to books. Or, you know, actual shoes…
  • Your desk is going to be a focal point in your room so make sure it’s not messy. Desk organisers will keep everything in place and ensure you don’t lose anything.
  • Prioritise your wardrobe if you’re limited on space for clothes. Only take what you need for the season you’re in and store the rest at home, under the bed, or in self-storage.

Storage for the Summer

If your family house isn’t close to your university, carting all your belongings home for the summer can be a nightmare. And what do you do if your parents no longer have room for you to bring everything back?

Self-storage is probably the best option. You don’t have to rent a giant container for the short time you’re away over the summer; you can get affordable small volume and box storage for just a couple of months.

Don’t have a car? TFM can even collect your boxed up storage for you then return it when you get back after the break.

Storage Between Houses

As you start to move into student houses, storage can become trickier. You might have accumulated some furniture by now and there can often be a few days or weeks where you find yourself between houses.

Luckily, there are plenty of short-term storage solutions available for these in-between times. Look for self-storage that is charged by the day so you don’t end up paying for a long-term contract you don’t need.

Going on a Gap Year?

Did you know that taking a gap year is one of the top 15 reasons people use storage facilities?

If you’re only away for a year, it doesn’t make sense to take all of your belongings with you. Shipping everything over to a new country is costly and — since most student travel around on their gap year — taking all your things with you is impractical anyway.

Most self-storage units can be rented long-term but you could also opt for a premium storage service where everything is packed up for you, securely stored while you’re away, and redelivered to your new student house when you return from your travels.

Students have enough to worry about without stressing over storage options. Whichever of our storage services you require, TFM is more than happy to help.
