About Us

As a family run storage and removals business TFM ‘The Furniture Men’ was established in 1992 and has been growing successfully ever since. Nearly 25 years later, we still have the passion and drive to firmly establish our organically grown business as one of the most respectable companies in Essex. As a result we are the go to for Chelmsford removals and storage. That on-going passion is what differentiates our business from many others. Our closely-knit team pride themselves on their friendly but highly professional approach to all the services we offer. Our relationship with all of our customers is absolutely paramount to us all.

In addition to TFM having more than two decades of experience, we are also members of the British Association of Removers and FEDEMAC and are committed to ensuring that our trained and professional staff maintain, at all times, the high level of care to both property and your possessions.

If you are looking for Chelmsford storage that is flexible to suit your needs there is nobody better than us. We provide the same great services we do when offering removals.

Meet The Team

Adam “Dachshund” Coleman

Adam “Dachshund” Coleman

Adam has been working at TFM with his Dad since before he went to school!

Growing up he spent Saturdays and school holidays learning what it takes to be a removal man and has completed courses in export wrapping, packing fine china and glass and moving specialist furniture. In his early twenties Adam passed a driving license allowing him to drive our 44 ton lorry and trailers.

Adam is the complete removal man and has patiently helped his two younger brothers and other young members of the TFM team as they learn the ropes of removals, earning his nicknames of Dachshund due to his very long body and short legs, or Larry, cos he really is as happy as.

Chloe “Pint sized” Brockwell

Chloe “Pint sized” Brockwell

Chloe joined TFM as part of our Apprenticeship scheme. She studied Business Administration at South Essex College and also working from our Burnham-on-Crouch office learning the in’s and out’s of the removals and storage industry.

Chloe has now secured a full time job with TFM and looks after our storage accounts, our daily removals accounts and helps to answer the phone to new customers.

Be warned, although Chloe is the only person working for TFM who is shorter than Ralph, nobody here would dream of arguing with her…………apart from perhaps Nick

Colin “Stats” Richardson

Colin “Stats” Richardson

Harry “The Sniff” Davies

Harry “The Sniff” Davies

Harry demonstrates TFM’s commitment to developing the younger members of our team.

He has known Adam and Josh since before he could walk so is part of the family. Harry started by learning basic manual handling and how to lift and handle furniture and boxes. He has completed courses in packing and export wrapping and more recently a course in estimating. TFM have also helped him pass his driving test so he now visits potential customers to offer them estimates for their forthcoming removals.

Perhaps the only problem with Harrys career choice is his allergy to cats and dogs meaning on certain removals he does struggle with a runny nose………

Jamie “Snake Man” Bird

Jamie “Snake Man” Bird

Jamie first worked for TFM 16 years ago so we think he can now be justified in describing himself as an established member of the team!

Already having removals experience before joining TFM, Jamie brought his own knowledge and has since taken courses to fine tune his ability to export wrap furniture, pack china and glass and dismantle and re-assemble furniture.

Like many removal men Jamie is a unique character and has a collection of freezers and reptiles second to none…

Jamie “No Mates” Johal

Jamie “No Mates” Johal

Jamie is very popular with all the staff and customers.

His nickname therefore is very unfair but has was given to him when he first worked for TFM some years ago because of his mother, the legendary Debbie No Mates, and it has stuck ever since.

James “Jim” Page

James “Jim” Page

James “Jim” Page has been working for TFM since 2006, he is now an established team member.

He has previously driven lorries around Europe and is an experienced driver of lorries and trailers – very handy when getting our larger rigs into tight housing estates and small villages around Britain and Europe!

Jim has learnt the art of packing a complete household into a lorry, and has been on courses to learn export wrapping and packing of china and glass.

Joshua “Mini Me” Coleman

Joshua “Mini Me” Coleman

Like his brother Adam, Josh has never known life without removals! He has, since he could walk, learnt about all aspects of removals and storage. Although only in his early twenties Josh has a license to drive our rigid lorries and can pack china and glass, export wrap furniture and fine art and handle more difficult and unusual items such as grand pianos.

Josh has been on courses learning how to estimate removals and has recently taken and passed his Certificate of Professional Competence in International Road Haulage and is now the transport manager for TFM.

Josh is also short, can be grumpy and argumentative and is regularly confused on the phone for his father, even by Tricia, but says he is nothing like his Dad

Kes “Little Man” Murphy

Kes “Little Man” Murphy

Kes is the youngest member of the family to join the ranks and although still in full time education, he is already becoming a proficient porter during weekend and holidays. Kes plans to join the Apprenticeship Scheme next year, if he passes the interview!!!!!

At 6’ 1” he towers over (in a gangly way) some of the other guys, but he is quiet and respectful in his manner…not that he has much choice with two older brothers to keep him in line.

Kes enjoys the camaraderie and team spirit that TFM is built upon, and what better way to start out in the world of employment than learning the ropes from your family.

Nic “Norman” Young

Nic “Norman” Young

Nic started on the TFM apprenticeship scheme at the beginning of 2014. Whilst he does have a structured learning program with South Essex College, most of his learning is done here at TFM, picking up the skills and knowledge from the ‘old hands’ he is working with every day.

Thanks to this, Nic is quickly growing into an asset in the TFM team and is soon to go on a course run by the British Association of Removers to learn about packing and export wrapping.

Nick has surprised us all with his hidden talents such as flicking and catching 16 beer mats and is renowned for his never ending chat during long journeys in the lorries. He has been offered a full time job at the end of his apprenticeship and we are proud of another home grown member of the team.

Ralph “Little Bear” Coleman

Ralph “Little Bear” Coleman

Having built up the business from scratch, from a second hand shop, Ralph is 100% committed to ensuring TFM is amongst the best removal companies in the South East of England.

In equal measure his pig headed stubbornness, short legs, anal attention to detail, vision and absolute commitment to excellent customer service has driven TFM toward his goal.

Lucky enough to have his sons working with him, he enjoys sharing his experience and knowledge knowing that the next generation are there to help him continue to drive TFM forward.

Rita “Nanny” Coleman

Rita “Nanny” Coleman

Rita had already reached retirement age when she helped her son Ralph start TFM in the early nineties.

Growing up as a butchers daughter during and after the war, and later running pubs with her husband Michael, Rita knew that for a business to succeed hard work was essential. The time she spent as a PA in London taught her good office management and in the early years at TFM she ran the office, answered the phones and kept the books up to date.

Now, there is a third generation of the family working at TFM and Rita can be proud of what she helped to start.

Thank you Nanny Rita…….

Tricia “Don’t darling a darling, darling”

Tricia “Don’t darling a darling, darling”

RMN. Dip.HE. Bsc(Hons). Msc(Dist).

Tricia is relatively new to the removals scene, being Ralph’s second wife and having pursued a very different career in healthcare.Tricia helps out when she can, in the office and behind the scenes, and is often able to give the view of a customer to a heated debate. Sometimes removal men forget just how specialist their knowledge is and might think some details seem obvious…..well Tricia is there to put them straight.

Also known as ‘step mom” she is tolerant of Ralph’s total commitment to the business and often has to ‘take a backseat’ while he gives his attention to his first love. (TFM of course……)

Paul and Amanda Pearson, Essex to New Zealand, July 2007

This is a belated but no less heartfelt thank you for the ever smiling, ever efficient way in which you dealt with our trauma of moving 25 years of junk out of our crumbling property, packing it, storing it, and then bringing it back in the most appalling conditions

Tom and Gill Curtis, Maldon, Essex to Cudworth, South Yorkshire, April 2004

I would like to send a belated thank you for a move that that could not have been better organised nor carried out…. Your two packers worked with quiet efficiency…. The three carrying out the removal worked as a fine team, which was especially important at the Frinton end since everything had to go by a small lift to the eighth floor.

W E Kelly, Removal to Frinton-on-Sea, September 2003

At last I have time to send you this letter to thank you and all the staff at TFM for the superb job you did in moving us to the Outer Hebrides. Needless to say it was a daunting prospect for us to move such a distance, however, from the outset I was put at ease by your confident and professional manner.

Andrew and Sally-Ann Crawford, Cold Norton, Essex to Isle of Lewis, Scotland, February 1998

Many thanks for the superb way that you looked after us in the course of removal from, or delivery to, no less than 4 houses. It would be impossible, I think, to find a more willing, cheerful and above all competent team of removal men

Christopher Dobie, Southminster, Essex to Manningtree, Essex via storage, October 1999

It involved packing up everything from our previous 8 bedroom house into 520 packing cases, 5 furniture vans, specialist packing of valuable antique furniture, china and oil paintings, an 1840’s grand piano. I would not hesitate in recommending their services to others
